During a recent trip of ours to the Flinders Ranges South Australia, it is easily seen here that not all parts of the Flinders Ranges have been receiving good rainfall. Some areas didn't look too bad but there is little sheep feed in this paddock.

Autumn Colours.

Autumn colours are in the Adelaide hills as the trees in the Mount Lofty Botanical Gardens turn from green leaves to red and yellow during the month of May.

The water was calm from no wind and the afternoon was late as the Port Germein jetty in South Australia started to turn a gold colour from the light.

North Terrace

While visiting the Royal Adelaide Hospital, we took advantage of some spare time to walk along the River Torrens in Adelaide South Australia, take some photos and return to the hospital via North Terrace. This photo was captured between the Museum and the Adelaide University.

Sand Hills

These sand hills form part of the country that can be found amongst the Gawler Ranges in South Australia. When driving in the area, there is no indication that the sand is about until you come around the corner and see them not very far off of the road.

This is one of the many roads that will take you through the Gawler Ranges in outback South Australia. A 4WD is not required to access these roads in dry weather conditions, but when it rains care is required.

Halls Gap.

Halls Gap is located in the Grampians within Victoria and this building can be found on the southern edge of the town. The Information Centre is well worth the visit when in the area to inform the visitor of what is available to be seen within the Grampians region.

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village.

Flagstaff Hill depicts what an early Australian shipping port would have been like. It overlooks the infamous Shipwreck Coast of Victoria on the Great Ocean Road at Warrnambool.

Port MacDonnell of South Australia is located on the eastern side of the Sate towards the southern part just below Mount Gambier on the coast and offers the tourist some great ocean views when you drive along the scenic drive to the south of the town.

Autumn colours at the Mount Loft Botanical Gardens in the Adelaide hills during 2008. It was a quick trip with limited time there before work after seeing some pictures in the daily newspaper during the morning. Next year we will be ready for the change of colour and will spend the day there with the cameras.

Pink Roadhouse Oodnadatta

It looks a little worse for wear, but the Pink Roadhouse at Oodnadatta on the Oodnadatta track in the outback of South Australia must have been hit by a strong wind shortly before we arrive there in August 2008. While the outside looked a little rough, in interior was what one would expect in an isolated location of the outback.

Arno Bay

Up early to capture this sunrise at Arno Bay on the eastern side of Eyre Peninsula South Australia where it was followed by a perfect day. We were on our way home to Adelaide from Port Lincoln when we spent the night here in the Caravan Park at Arno Bay.

The old Telegraph Station at Alice Springs in the Northern Territory can be found just north of Alice Spring where guided tours are offered which will explain what the people endured so many years ago to establish and maintain communication in the vast outback of Australia.

Out driving during a weekend visit to Wallaroo South Australia, we came across this beach at Balgowan South Australia. The sand is firm enough to allow vehicles to drive along the coast. The day started of with light rain but by the time we had reached Balgowan, the sky was starting to break up allowing the water to gain some rich blue colour.

Pinnacle Lookout.

One of Australia's great places to visit would have to be the Grampians situated in the state of Victoria. This photo was taken from the Pinnacle Lookout which has magnificent view of the township of Halls Gap. A level of fitness is required to allow the hiker to safely climb to this lookout, but well worth the effort once you have reached it.

Fun on the Beach

Nothing like a free run on the beach to keep fit. The only problem here is that they don't get on the beach as often as they would like. The fur was being pushed to the right of the screen, not by the speed of their running but by the force of the wind blowing all weekend.

Simpson Desert

After a trip to the Simpson Desert in the top end of South Australia during late August of 2008, we enjoyed many days and nights on the road exploring the vast outback. It was amazing to watch the sand colours change from a yellow to a rich red as seen here by this red tone. This photo was taken with the early sunrise to my back.

Monarto Zoo is located in South Australia between Adelaide and Murray Bridge some 70 kilometres east of Adelaide. This little Lion cub didn't mind posing for the cameras while sunning itself on a rock.

Red Cliffs.

Ardrossan South Australia has some red clay type cliffs which run to the north and south sides of the local town jetty. It was out of bed early last weekend to capture some sunrise photographs of the cliffs. Unfortunately there was a fair bit of cloud cover blocking the sun during the start of the sunrise which has reduced some of the red effect on the cliff walls.

12 Apostles.

The 12 Apostles are constantly being pelted by the Southern Ocean waves daily and in many years to come there may no longer be the number of Apostles that stand today. The 12 Apostles form part of the Great Ocean Road in the western part of Victoria Australia.

Blue Lake.

Mount Gambier's Blue Lake is bright blue during the warmer period of each year as seen in this photo. The water is crystal clear to look at when up close when the lake is blue. During the off time of the year when it isn't blue, the lake appears to be a dark blue/green colour.

MacKenzie Falls.

MacKenzie Falls is part of the Grampians National Park in Victoria. While this photo was taken only this month, the reduced amount of water flowing over the Falls during summer will increase after the winter rains making for a more impressive photo.

Low Water.

Meningie is nestled on the banks of Lake Albert in the south east of South Australia. This photo was taken standing from the Lake Albert Caravan Park looking across the lake back towards the township of Meningie. Normally the bare ground would be covered with water if it were not for our current drought. The only benefit to the low water level would have to be the increased safety to children who now have a great swimming beach instead of walking down the bank into deep water.

London Bridge.

London Bridge is part of Victoria's Great Ocean Road area where thousands of tourist flock to view some of natures coastal scenery. The tourist strip in this part of Australia stretches from Warrnambool in the western part of the State to Geelong near Melbourne. The section known as London Bridge was once connected to the mainland until the piece collapsed leaving a small group of tourist stranded on the outer section. The group were eventually lifted back to the mainland via helicopter.

Orroroo Reservior.

Orroroo is a small country town in the southern Flinders Ranges some 260km north of Adelaide in South Australia. The Reservoir was constructed in 1906. It originally held approximately 1,540 mega litres of water and was used by settlers for growing Lucerne and in dairies. In 1973 silt build up, insufficient rainfall and erosion caused the reservoir to be abandoned.

This will be the last posting from us as we head to the Great Ocean Road tomorrow and then onto The Grampians before returning home and back to work.

This photo is of the old Black Rock Hotel in the small South Australian town of Black Rock in the mid north of the state. The photo was taken during the afternoon with the sun behind the Hotel so it is a bit darker than if it were taken mid morning, perhaps a different time of the day next time.

Green Hills.

With these hills facing west and the late afternoon sun shining on the green grass along the Fleurieu Peninsula, it gave the afternoon a false indication of what the day was really like. Overcast for most of the day with dark shadows, these few moments were an exseption to the rule.

Renmark is located in the Riverland 256 km from Adelaide when heading towards Sydney New South Wales. This photos shows the main wharf area where houseboats are able to tie up and walk to Renmark's shopping outlets to replenish groceries.

Captured this photo while out driving along the Murray River between Lyrup and Renmark in the Murray River National Park Lyrup Flat. A polarizing filter was used with this one to bring up the colour of the duck weed seen here floating on the water.

Paringa Bridge.

While at Renmark for the weekend, we saw the Paringa bridge lift up to allow houseboats through. The bridge has been operating since 1927 and lifts up to allow river traffic through only two time a day, the first being at 9.30am and the second at 2.30pm. Should the bridge be required to operate outside of these two time slots, prior arrangement must be made with the operator.

Garden Island.

This photo was taken at an area known as Garden Island which is an area of reclaimed land here in Adelaide South Australia. In the distance you can see a jetty which was built along the mangroves for the purpose of recreational fishing. On a calm day, the water reflections in this area are great if there at the right time.

Causeway.

The tourist town of Victor Harbor is located 80 km south of Adelaide, South Australia. One of the main attractions to Victor Harbor is Granite Island, and the causeway access is shown here in this photo.

Painted Desert.

The area known as the Painted Desert is located in the north of South Australia some one hundred kilometres east of Cadney Park Homestead. The road out to the painted Desert is all unsealed and can be very rough to drive on. This photo shows one of the many land formations which make up the Painted Desert area.

River Torrens.

Following on from yesterday's post, we parked the car near the Zoo and set off on foot to walk the banks of the River Torrens. From the Zoo we headed west along the northern banks of the Torrens until we arrived at the weir for a short break before returning on the southern side making our way back to the Zoo and vehicle.

This photo was taken from the southern side looking back into the city, not all that far down from the Zoo. At times the water was smooth as seen here making for a very pretty location.

Adelaide CBD

It was a spur of the moment decision yesterday to drive into the city for a casual walk along the River Torrens. It has been something that we have been going to do for some time now so with a warm afternoon and full sun we thought we would give it a go. Ormiston Gorge.

Ormiston Gorge forms part of the West MacDonnell Range in the southern parts of the Northern Territory of Australia and is located 135 km west of Alice Springs via the Larapinta and Namatjira Drives.

The gorge has a near permanent waterhole estimated to be up to 14 metres deep at its southern end. The area is accessible all year round with its own camping ground and toilets for visitors to use.

Wangarra Lookout

Wilpena Pound forms part of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia and is situated 481 km north of Adelaide. First class sealed roads allow easy access for tourist to visit the area.

Wangarra Lookout is accessed from Wilpena Pound Resort and can take up to two hours for the return walk to be completed. A short walk up Wangarra Hill behind the Hills Homestead takes you to the lower (5 mins) and top (20 mins) lookouts which offer panoramic views of Wilpena Pound.

Uluru

Uluru sometimes called Eyers Rock, is located 440 km south west of Alice Springs at the bottom of the Northern Territory in the centre of Australia. The country side is flat for miles around with the exception of Uluru which can be seen from far away.

There is a good sealed road for motorist to use to visit the attraction, there is a large commercial airport based at Yulara Resort. Many tour operators run from Alice Springs to Yulara on a daily basis offering an array of tours to those who don't want to drive themselves. Entry permits are required to visit the area and are available at Yulara.

Hogwash Bend Sunset.

Hogwash Bend is an area on the River Murray between the river towns of Waikerie and Morgan in South Australia. The area is a very popular camping location with spectacular river views.

While we were camped there, this photo was taken late afternoon while the sun was setting giving that golden glow across the water and onto the trees.

Chamber's Pillar.

Chamber's Pillar can be found in a 340 hectare Reserve 160 km south of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. The road into Chamber's Pillar is unsealed and can be closed after heavy rains in the area.

The Pillar towers 50 metres above the surrounding plain and history has it recorded that sandstone deposits were laid down in the area 350 million years ago. Since then wind and rain have eroded away the softer material, leaving this solitary column of pebbly sandstone.

Sharing the Road.

When traveling north from Port Augusta in South Australia through to Darwin in the Northern Territory, these two road users share the same highways.

The large triple road train rolls along at speed up to 100 km per hour while the smaller 4WD & caravan will move along at speeds averaging approximately 90 km per hour. Most with common 2 way radio communication share the roads in harmony.

Canola Crop.

This crop of Canola was captured to film during 2005 on our return trip to Adelaide from Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. The actual location was near the small township of Riverton approximately 80 km north of Adelaide.

When the bright yellow flowers of the Canola crop are displayed in the sunshine with the surrounding green paddocks close by, it offerers great opportunities to capture the contrasting colours to a photo.

Traphina Gorge

Traphina Gorge is part of the East MacDonnell Ranges and is 85 km east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. While the East MacDonnell Ranges isn't visited like the West MacDonnell Range is, it still offers some very nice scenery.

Traphina Gorge is noted for its sheer quartzite cliffs and River Red Gum lined watercourses and offerers wide sandy creek beds with some water holes if you are there at the right time. The waterhole in this photo was home to hundreds if not thousands of Zebra Finches which would fly away if disturbed only to return back near the water soon after.

Rainbow Valley

Rainbow Valley is located to the east of Stuarts Well in the centre of Australia up in the Northern Territory. Whilst the 22 kms of dirt between the main road and the valley can be very rough, the drive in is well worth it particularly if you are able to witness a sunset.

Many people as we did use Stuarts Well as a base camp if visiting the area. The area in the foreground of this photo sometimes fills with water after heavy rains and offers some very magnificent water reflections, it is just a pity that it is so far away from home.

Sand Hills

After being away for several weeks, we are back with lots of photos that have been taken between Port Augusta in South Australia to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

These two were taken near Yulara in the Northern Territory and show how red the sand is in that region.

It depends on the time of the day as to how red the sand will appear. The sky will also change it's blue to a very deep and amazing colour.

Adelaide at Night.

The main Victoria Square fountain in the centre of Adelaide's CBD taken during late afternoon while were were waiting for darkness.

Once it was dark, we started to click away and finished up with this one amongst many others.

With the light shining on the water and the slow shutter speed, this effect was achieved.

Houseboats.

House boats on the River Murray come in all shapes and sizes from accommodating only two people to just about as many as you like.

While this houseboat may look small, it will accommodate up to 12 people in luxury style.

Luxury plus, with this multi story houseboat from the Unforgettable range.

This one found itself stuck on the sand when it wanted to move off, something any size houseboat needs to be careful of when berthing for a period of time.

Murray River South Australia.

The creeks and low lying flood areas that are filled with water from the Murray River are known as backwaters.

As there is very little water movement within the backwaters, it allows more reeds and water plants to grow as seen here.

The brown cover seen here is a ribbon type weed which grows where the water is still and allows the water below to become crystal clear.

These backwater areas can be very pretty to look at and offer a peaceful location to all of those who visit the area.

Old Buildings.

These buildings are a part of the old Wilpena Homestead which is located at Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.

These buildings have been maintained to their original condition and layout.

With the green grass seen in these photos, it is easy to see why the early explorers first thought that it was a suitable area for cereal cropping.

Innes National Park.

Innes National Park can be found 300 kilometres from Adelaide on the tip of Yorke Peninsula.

As with most National Parks, there is an entry fee applicable which can be paid at the Park entrance.

The Park offers camping, bush walking, photography and some great ocean views just to mention a few.

Late Afternoon Light.

With the fading afternoon light, the River Murray turns a golden colour as the sun is going down.

Hogwash Bend on the River Murray is a favorite spot of ours and as such, we have a lot of mixed photos of the area.

This one is also of Hogwash Bend although it was taken earlier in the afternoon before the golden colour started to have it's effect.

Flinders Ranges.

Rawnsley Bluff is a part of the Wilpena Pound area of the Finders Ranges in South Australia.

When you view Rawnsley Bluff as the sun is setting, you will see it change to a rich golden colour before changing to a dark blue as the light fades.

Between Wilpena Pound and Hawker, you will find the Moralana Scenic Drive which takes you west from the main Wilpena Pound road across to the Leigh Creek road.

The photo here was taken from the Black Gap Nature Preservation Area which is a short drive off of the Moralana Scenic Drive.

Birds.

While being away for the weekend, these were two species of the many birds that were about.

Many Kookaburras were calling each other from the tree tops that they perched high up in.

The smaller Miner bird was about in great number and wasn't slow to move in for a free feed when on offer.

Holiday Units.

Melrose is located 265 kilometres north of Adelaide and is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges.

These unusual looking overnight accommodation units can be found at one of the local Hotels in Melrose's main street.

The designer of these units certainly came up with something different to look at. One unit was even built around a tree as if the vehicle had actually hit the tree while travelling along.

Adelaide at Night.

These photos were taken a few years ago while in the main part of Adelaide's CBD with this one being taken at North Terrace soon after sunset.

With the neon signs lit up at night, this one in the Rundle Mall makes me wonder what sort of fun could be had capturing some of the lights in Vegas or Tokyo.

Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village.

Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village can be found 5 kilometres north of Tailem Bend or 90 kilometres east of Adelaide on the Princess Highway.

First established in 1982, Old Tailem Town allows it's visitors to take a walk back in time and see what life was like all those years ago.

The area illustrates what life for the South Australian settler was like from 1860 through to 1960.

The well appointed tea and coffee room allows everyone to enjoy a self paced visit to the area without being too rushed.

Mannum Sunrise.

You always know that you have a good start to the day when you get a pretty sunrise like this one.

This part of the day was captured at Mannum on the River Murray in South Australia.

After starting off a red colour, it turned gold before disappearing to a perfect day.

Birds.

The common seagull, found where there is sea water and fish & chips. It never seems to amaze me how their radar lets them know that there is food around.

The Rainbow Lorikeet is also a common bird in Australia with it's bright colours making it a favorite at a lot of tourist locations.

If they are in the trees within a street and you park your car under the tree, they quickly do their business all over it.

Burra Creek Gorge.

Some places appeal to people more than others and for water reflection photography, this location at Burra Creek Gorge has plenty to offer.

It is the sort of spot that has a bit of everything that you want from very still water, large trees and at the right time of the year, plenty of blue sky and green grass.

Miniature Village.

The Wild Rose Garden and Tearoom is situated a few kilometres Adelaide side of Victor Harbor on the Adelaide to Victor Harbor road. As well as the Tea Room where you can enjoy some lovely scones with jam and cream, there is also a Rose Garden and Miniature Village.

To walk around and view the Miniature Village which is spread out amongst lush green scenery and manicured lawn areas, it can make for a relaxing afternoon in the winter sunshine when combined with the hot scones with jam & cream.

Low Water.

As Australia is experiencing one of its toughest droughts, I thought that I would show these two photos of the River Murray at Mannum South Australia.

The first photo was taken in mid 2005 with a reasonable amount of water in the river. Compare it to the photo below which was taken two years later and check the difference.

This photo was taken mid 2007 and shows how the lower water level of the main river is starting to have an effect on the flood areas to the side.

Although I have never seen it looking like this before, it makes us appreciate what it should be like and can only hope that in time, it returns to it's natural water level.

Horseshoe Bay.

This delightful bay is located at Port Elliot which is on the Fleurieu Peninsula between Goolwa and Victor Harbor South Australia.

The beach is very popular with holiday makers who take advantage of the many styles of accommodation within the area.

While the waters within the bay are protected for beach goers, the water further out, can be at times, a very deep and pretty blue to look at.

Victor Harbor.

Granite Island is a small island at Victor Harbor 80 kilometres south of Adelaide. It is a busy sea side tourist destination which is very popular with families and the likes.

Granite Island is a short walk over the causeway or if you would rather enjoy a ride on the horse drawn tram, there are two operating during the busy periods.

Once on the island, there are walking trails which will take you around the outside of the island or there is one that will go over the top and over to the other side.

There are guided walks during the night to view the penguins as they come home to their burrows from their fishing trips.

Palm Valley.

Palm Valley is 138 kilometres west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and forms part of the 46,000 hectares Finke Gorge National Park.

Access to Palm Valley is by high clearance four wheel drive vehicle only along the road which follows the Finke River bed.

There is a campground at Palm Valley for overnight visitors to use before they take the walk through the centre of the Cabbage Palm river bed and returning via the top section which gives you an excellent view of the Palms from high up.

Cleland Wildlife Park.

Imagine what you would do next if you come across this Monitor Lizard when you were not expecting it. I think most of us would be heading for a toilet.

This large fella can be found at the Cleland Wildlife Park in Adelaide South Australia.

Like so many of the animals at Cleland, it is all rest and no work. Visitors have the luxury of walking amongst most of the animals within their huge holding areas.

Even this kangaroo isn't put off by people strolling by.

Ormiston Gorge.

Ormiston Gorge forms part of the West MacDonell Ranges out from Alice Springs in the centre of Australia and has a near-permanent waterhole, estimated to be up to 14m deep at its southern end.

As well as the beauty of this location, there is also a well maintained camping area near Ormiston Gorge which allows it's visitors plenty of time to enjoy the area.

Murphy's Haystacks.

These granite rocks or inselbergs are located on a hill top some thirty nine kilometres south east of Streaky Bay on the western side of Eyre Peninsula of South Australia.

It has been noted in history that the area gained it's name from people who viewed the inselbergs from a distance thinking that they we in fact a hay stack. More can be read on this location by clicking here.

Found these and many more growing in the wild at a place called Hogwash Bend which is an area on the River Murray in South Australia.

The flower bush is very tolerant to a low rainfall and adds colour to the immediate area where it is found growing.

Redbank Gorge.

Redbank Gorge forms part of the West MacDonell Ranges out from Alice Springs in the centre of Australia.

We were unaware of this Gorge until we spotted the sign post leading into the Gorge and as such did not realize at the time that there was approximately a twenty minute walk to reach the main water pool in the Gorge. The water seen here is what has remained after some recent rain in the area.

The Breakaways.

While flicking through some of my older photos, I come across these two of The Breakaways and though I would put them on my blog to go with an earlier posting of the same area.

This is a very colourful location and we are looking forward to revisiting the area next month on our way to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

Perhaps we will be able to captures some more shots to post here if the weather is kind to us while there.

Geikie Gorge.

Geikie Gorge can be found in the top part of Western Australia in the Kimberly region. It is located 20 kilometres out west from the town of Fitzroy Crossing or 280 kilometres east of Derby.

The area is open to the public from 6.30am until 6.30pm each day unless the area has been flooded during the wet season that runs from December through to March each year.

During the wet season the water will rise by as much as 16.5 metres making this river one of the fastest flowing rivers in the world. The white colours of the walls indicate the water level during the wet season.

The water supports sawfish, stingrays, freshwater crocodiles and many other fish species. There are public toilets, a shelter shed, BBQ facilities and large picnic area for visitors to use while visiting.

The Red Centre.

The locations around the middle of Australia is often referred to as "The Red Centre" and looking at these two photos, it is easy to see where the name comes from.

The two photos here were taken near Yulara, west of Alice Springs. It is typical of the country in the centre of Australia with the deep rich red colours and the bright green bushes growing in the same area.

While the dirt is red, it is by no means dirty. When you walk in this dirt, it falls straight off of your shoes without leaving any dirty and dusty tell tales behind. It behaves a lot like beach sand.

Ellery Creek Big Hole

Ellery Creek Big Hole is located 90 kilometers west of Alice Springs in the West MacDonell Ranges along Namatjira Drive.

Like all of the gorge areas in the West MacDonell Ranges, there are walking trails that can be enjoyed by the tourist while visiting the area.

Once the walk has been completed if that is your thing, there is ample shade to rest under while one enjoys a picnic. The water pool at Ellery Creek Big Hole is permanent and swimming is permitted.
